Dry Dock Update: Painting the O’Brien
The work continues at a dry dock near Vallejo, California, to keep an 80 year old ship that was part of the D-Day landing in Normandy, up and running. The Jeremiah O’Brien is sitting high and dry at the Mare Island Dry Dock. The O’Brien, one of only two operating Liberty Ships, is undergoing a clean-up, Coast Guard inspections, repairs to the ship and right now — is being painted. Tarps have been draped over the ship and the dry dock to cut down on spray paint being carried by wind.
When finished the O’Brien will return to her berth at San Francisco’s Pier 35 and will be doing public cruises during fleet week this fall. The ships is powered by steam, and on the cruises, passengers can tour the engine room which was used to film scenes in the movie Titanic.
