Mountain Music: The Sounds of West Virginia
Of all the regions of America, there has never really been something quite like the music born in Appalachia. In remote hollows and ridge tops of West Virginia, the old songs get passed down from generation to generation, and a front porch full of musicians going at it, will always trump listening to radio, records, CD’s or your favorite streaming service.
Experiencing a jam session in West Virginia needs to be on everyone’s bucket list. Like a fine wine aging in the barrel — music from West Virginia only gets better with time.
We traveled to The Hatfield Homeplace & Museum in Sarah Ann, where the Hatfield-McCoy feud played out, and O’Hurley’s General Store in Shepherdstown, a stone’s throw from Washington D.C. These are two spots for hearing some of the great old music that has come out of these mountains — music and traditions that began centuries ago.
