History Hero: Bene Medina

Bene Medina is one of those legends that you have to “hear” to believe. The Texas teacher and musician, who grew up on the Texas-Mexican border, can really bring an accordion to life. He started playing at age 11 and has been at it almost 70 years. The teacher in Bene explained that playing fast waltzes helped him learn the instrument. He is a member of the Texas Conjunto Music Hall of fame, lives in San Antonio, and is a master of the music that is just so much a part of the Mexican-American community. You can see and hear him in this video short, part of our Saving Americana Story under construction story called “Saving The Accordion.”
