Ford Tri Motor
Depending on your opinion, it’s not the prettiest airplane ever built. But the Ford Tri-Motor — known as the “Tin Goose,” was a utility workhorse that really helped sell Americans on flying. Developed in the 1920’s, Ford bought the rights to the plane — added three engines, and the familiar corrugated siding. It was all metal — and that robust look, and three engines, helped a lot of people get over a fear of flying. And several of the Tri-Motors are still active today — restored by various groups. The Experimental Aircraft Association — the group that puts on the Oshkosh Air Show — flys two Tri-Motors, giving thousands of people rides each year. We tagged along in Vacaville, California — and by the time we touched down, realized it’s actually the prettiest plane ever built.
