B29 Doc: An American Legend
B-29 “Doc” is one of those stories about how one person’s dream can mobilize an army of hundreds of volunteers to save a piece of Americana. The plane — built near the end of World War II — is now one of only two flying B-29’s. It was dragged out of the Mojave Desert boneyard at the Navel Air Weapons Station China Lake, and shipped to Wichita, Kansas. by the sheer force and personality of Tony Mazzolini.
That rescue was the dream of one man: Tony Mazzolini. It was then rebuilt by a team from Boeing in Wichita, and hundreds of volunteers. The plane now tours the country as a “flying museum.” As part of our documentary: Boneyard Bomber: Flying Again, we followed the plane and its volunteer crew around the country, and at an airshow at Sheppard Air Force Base, in Wichita Falls, Texas, saw an amazing sight. The modern planes — The Air Force Thunderbirds, the F-22 Raptors, and the B-2 bomber flew right over and around Doc — a sort of tribute to an old historic warrior. Afterwards, the young pilot from the F-22, climbed aboard Doc, and spent half an hour just marveling at the history of it all.
