History Hero: Noah Lewis
Noah Lewis is one of those people who live to bring history alive. In a wide sense he tells the story of the American revolution. But on a micro level, he tells the story of one man: Edward Ned Hector, a free African American man and soldier who fought in the Revolutionary War. Noah recreates Hector in classrooms and on battlefield reenactments. We connected with him at a fascinating war reenactment event in Haddonfield, New Jersey.
Noah was born in Heidelberg, Germany and lives outside Philadelphia in Upper Darby. He became a Certified Bio-Medical Technician and owned an electronics repair shop, TLC of Technical Service. But now he brings history to life at schools, historical sites, and historical events.
He authored “Edward ‘Ned’ Hector – Revolutionary War Hero”, and is writing Ned Hector’s biography. In 1996 he began presenting the hero Ned Hector at an area school. While doing genealogical research on his family learned about a black continental soldier who fought in the Battle of Brandywine and was held in such high regard by his community that they named a street after him in the mid 1850’s. Edward Hector and the heritage of other black historical figures who contributed to America’s freedom. Hector was a teamster who led a wagon — filled with ammunition — into battle — and refused to retreat.
You can learn more about Noah in our video “Living History” shot at the “Skirmish” outside the Indian King Tavern, in Haddenfield, New Jersey. The reenactment happens each June and helps tell the story of the war to a new generation. The Indian King Tavern is a New Jersey State Historic park that can be viewed year round and is famous not just for the Skirmish, but it’s roll in the history of the original colonies. You will hear more in our new video “The Conestoga Wagon.”
