Small Town: Georgetown, Colorado

The west is full of towns born in the 18 hundreds as one gold rush after another triggered a flood of people to the mountains from Colorado west to California and Oregon — chasing gold fever.

Many were boom towns that shot up overnight — and died just as fast when the ore ran out. The lucky ones are still around — finding a new life. Such is the case of Georgetown, Colorado, about 50 miles west of Denver, where for a time gold and sliver were the prize. Now it’s all about tourism. With the classic old architecture of the day on full display — and the high elevation (8,500 feet approx.) it’s a big draw year round. Being located near the ski areas, and right along Interstate 70 does not hurt. Come December, the Georgetown Christmas Market is a big draw.

And all year long, people visit the Georgetown Loop Railroad, which runs uphill from Georgetown to Silver Plume. Because of the elevation gain, the rail line loops back and forth across the valley — and it a terrific way to see the area — be it in winter with the snow, summer or in the fall when the aspen change color. Train lovers really are attached to the railroad — with it’s vintage steam engines, and great views from the open air cars — riding atop a tall trestle.
