Lone Pine Movie Tour: Yellow Sky

An annual tradition continues on the east side of Sierra Nevada in Southern California that began a century ago with the early western films. In Lone Pine, California, they gather to study and learn about the other Hollywood: The Alabama Hills of Lone Pine. It’s here some 400 films have been shot — and where the early western films took on a larger than life quality. It’s not just about the celebrities — it’s about the unique landscape — the rocks. The unique backdrop — those rounded, weathered granite rocks, made those westerns all that more powerful.

 

Now, the Museum of Western Film History, in Lone Pine, put’s on an annual film festival each October. You watch films, you meet celebrities, and most important, you head out into the rocks. Film Location Guides have spent years looking at the old films and figuring out the exact locations where different scenes were shot. Tyler Malone  — a writer, professor and film location hunter lives in Los Angeles, and takes us on a tour into the Alabama Hills and shows us locations for the film Yellow Sky. Shot in 1948, it stars Gregory Peck, Anne Baxter and Richard Widmark. The film is a classic and it’s legendary for showcasing the Alabama Hills.
