Old Time Fiddle: Music from “The Weiser”
For 70 years, some of the purest fiddle music on earth has echoed through the campgrounds in Weiser, Idaho.
It’s home to The National Oldtime Fiddlers’ Contest & Festival, what many just call “The Weiser.” Each June, people gather to compete, to jam with friends and strangers, and to carry on the old sounds that first arrived on the western frontier with the settlers and gold miners of the 19th Century. We caught up with one group — some professionals, some wannabe’s, some just friends.
Kenny Feinstein and his group Water Tower Band, will play punk rock and bluegrass, but especially love the old style music. In between gigs, Kenny came back to Weiser to jam with long time friends, and gave us a taste of the old style, with an old song called “Sugar Hill.” This will be a part of a longer program we are working on about the contest and the festival which has made Weiser famous, and helps preserve the music that speaks to the early days of America.
