Small Town Weiser, Idaho

We found a classic small town in the backyard of one of the fastest growing cities in America — Boise, Idaho. North of Boise, the state capitol, you will find the small farming community of Weiser, Idaho. It’s right on the Snake River — and right on the Oregon border, and not far from Hells Canyon. One of its greatest claims to fame started in 1953. This is the home of the National Oldtime Fiddlers’ Contest & Festival.

Once a year, it’s invaded by music lovers — a sort of mini-Woodstock for fiddle music. Competitions are held all week – but it’s the vibe and the music back in the campgrounds that is just so Americana. Here you find old friends mixing with strangers. Professional musicians, and beginners. Young kids and legends in their 80’s come to jam. And here you will find music from the 19th century. They call it “The Weiser,” and it’s impossible not to smile when you get to town and start soaking in all that music.
