Trails West
Just one of the many non profit groups working to save history has long been a focus of some our Saving Americana videos. Trails West, is working to identify, mark, and save the old trails used by the pioneers that came West in a stream of wagon trains in the 18-hundreds. They have planted some 700 signs marking stretches of the Oregon, California and dozens of other trails that fanned out across the west. We took a trip with them into the Nevada wilderness to watch them navigate the Applegate Trail — an alternate to the Oregon Trail. Out on the trail, there is no phone or internet service. No power lines or running water. You begin to get an appreciation for what the pioneers endured. Much of the routing and information about the trails comes from hundreds of old diaries, written during their journey West. Here’s the story of Trails West, and a mission of preservation.
