The Packers Scramble

As part of our efforts to document people Saving Americana, we frequently help small non-profit groups and museums by sharing our videos. So when the 50th anniversary of Mule Days came along, we got an eyeful of this wonderful tradition. Packers in the Sierra Nevada organized the event in the town of Bishop. When then Governor Ronald Reagan road his horse in the parade, it became an instant hit. One of the most interesting things at Mule Days is called “The Packers Scramble.” Teams take off all the pack gear from the mules, create a bit of a stampede and then race to round up their animals, reload, and race around the track. As packer Trent Peterson put it, “it’s the greatest high in the world.”
