Jeremiah O’Brien: Back in Ship Shape

The World War Two Liberty Ship Jeremiah O’Brien is one of the last reminders of D-Day. The O’Brien was there — racing critical cargo to the troops on the beaches. She still sails — now giving tourists in San Francisco Bay a taste of D-Day. But age and rust is creeping up on the old gem. And Covid cost the non profit that runs the ship dearly. Then came the fire. A four alarm blaze destroyed a building right next to the O’Brien at Fishermans Wharf — threatening the ship. Firefighters saved the ship — but there was still damage. After nearly a year, volunteers and others have made massive repairs — and say she’s in Ship Shape — ready to head back out. Here’s the story of Saving Americana — nearly 80 years after D-Day.
